What I’m Up To At The Moment

I know it’s been a while since I’ve posted. I’ve also been neglecting Twitter and Facebook, for those of you who follow me there. Bad Chris!

Truth is, I’ve been trying to cut down on my internet time in order to get more writing done. I love the internet. I really do. There are so many interesting, hilarious, and occasionally educational things out there that it’s a constant battle to actually turn it off and walk away. So in order to actually use at least some of my non-university-related time for writing, I’ve had to force myself to limit my internet time across the board, and that includes things like blogs and Twitter.

Fortunately, it’s been paying off. Here’s where I’m up to at the moment:

Don’t Be a Hero: First Draft Complete!

Since I finished up The Man Who Crossed Worlds, I’ve been working on my superhero novel, Don’t Be a Hero.  Set in an alternate New Zealand in 1969 after superheroes have fallen from grace, the novel follows the adventures of ex-heroes Spook and the Carpenter as they make a living doing the sort of private detective work that normal humans are incapable of. They think they’re taking on a simple case to tracking down the kidnappers of a metahuman teenager. But they are about to be drawn into the machinations of a supercriminal gathering the remnants of the golden age of superheroes to his banner by whatever means necessary. A supercriminal intent on changing the world forever. A supercriminal with nothing to lose.

Unfortunately, the first draft of Don’t Be a Hero took much longer than I anticipated. My writing slowed almost to a halt over the Christmas period, and it wasn’t until late February that I actually managed to get the damn thing finished. The final word count came in at a little over 110k words, although I expect that will grow a little on subsequent revisions as my endings tend to run short on the first pass.

I have to admit I was feeling a little exhausted by the time I finished. This has taught me that I get a bit run down if a project goes on too long. I’m absolutely in love with the book, but I need to take a break from it before I get started on the second draft. Which brings me to what I’m doing now.

The Man Who Walked in Darkness: First Draft 50% Complete!

The second Miles Franco book picks up about six months after the events of The Man Who Crossed Worlds, and follows Miles trying to pick up the pieces of his life. But he’s only just starting to get things together when the cops show up again. But not to arrest him this time. They’re here to inform him that his friend, the jazz singer Claudia Hennel, has been killed. Haunted by the things he’s done and determined to get revenge, Miles sets out to find the killer. But in Bluegate, nothing is ever as simple as it seems. And the world is changing. All the worlds are changing.

Writing for The Man Who Walked in Darkness has been a lot smoother. I’ve given myself a word count goal per day that means I’ll get the draft done in a reasonable amount of time without burning myself out or compromising other areas of my life.  So far, I’ve managed to keep to that pretty well. My current word count *checks Scrivener* is 47,430 words of an estimated 90,000 or so total. So I’m over halfway there. I’m having a lot of fun being back in Miles’ head, and he is–of course–getting into all sorts of trouble.

The plan is to complete the draft of The Man Who Walked in Darkness sometime during April (fingers crossed), take a short break, then jump back into revisions for Don’t Be a Hero. From then on it’ll be an editing frenzy of Hero and then Darkness. Unlike some writers, I actually enjoy editing. It’s great to have the framework of the story already there, and now I get to build it into something beautiful and awesome. I’m looking forward to it.

If people are interested, sometime soon I might do a post about how I do my outlining and writing. I’ve got rows of index cards stuck to my wall next to my computer to show the scenes, acts, and major characters of Darkness, and it’s begging to have a photo taken. We’ll see what happens.

I almost forgot (actually I did forget and I had to come back and edit this post), if you want to find out as soon as either of these books are released, sign up to the mailing list on the top right hand side of the page. I’ll fire off an email to you when they’re available. Don’t worry, I’ll only email you when there’s a new release and no one else besides me will have access to your address, so I won’t be spamming you. Anyway, thanks guys.

Stay classy, everyone.

The Death and Return of Superman

A brilliant educational rant about the absurdity of death in comics. Don’t miss the cameos by Elijah Wood, Mandy Moore and others.

Star Wars Uncut: Director’s Cut is freakin’ fantastic

Some of you guys out there might have heard of Star Wars Uncut, a crowdsourced, shot-for-shot remake of Star Wars: A New Hope made entirely of user-submitted 15 second clips.

Well, if you hadn’t heard of it before, you have now. And now the final, polished director’s cut is up on Youtube. I’m part way through it, and it’s insane, surreal, and utterly fantastic. Check it out.

Writing Goals for 2012

It’s a new year, so it’s time to work out what my writing career holds for me in the next 12 months (or at least until the apocalypse comes). As the years go by, writing is becoming a greater and greater part of my life, yet I still struggle with those ancient twin demons of procrastination and video games. My hope is that by declaring my goals here and making them reasonable and measurable, I’ll be able to stick to them.

1) Finish and publish the next Miles Franco book

2011 saw the publication of The Man Who Crossed Worlds, the first book in my pulp urban fantasy series staring freelance Tunneler Miles Franco. I’ve had a great response so far, and I’m currently waiting on reviews from several excellent book blogs and review sites. I Smell Sheep was first out of the gate, with a 4-star review up now, and an interview coming soon.

But I’m not content to sit around waiting. The next book in the series, tentatively titled The Man Who Walked in Darkness, is underway, with plenty more of Miles’ adventures to follow. Taking place a few months after the events of Worlds, it features a bunch of returning characters as well as several newcomers and an expanded look at Bluegate and the rest of the universe.

2) Finish and publish my superhero novel, Don’t Try to Be a Hero

My attention span is non-existent, so it was always pretty much inevitable that my focus would spread beyond the Miles Franco series. Don’t Try to Be a Hero is set mainly in New Zealand in the late ‘60s, following ex-superheroes Spook and the Carpenter. After the inevitable government restrictions on metahuman activities, Spook and the Carpenter get by doing semi-legal private detective work for whoever’s paying. But their latest investigation into the kidnapping of a boy spirals out of control, putting themselves, their families, and countless innocents in danger. In this world, it doesn’t pay to be a hero.

After reading several parodies and pastiches of the superhero genre, I decided to see if I could play the idea relatively straight while retaining a level of humor. I’m currently around 60,000 words through what I expect will be a fairly hefty 140,000 word novel (although that may get trimmed down in editing). My progress stalled a bit over the Christmas/New Year break, but I think it’s about time I got back on that horse and dig in the spurs.

3) Start and finish another novel

I have no idea what this one’s going to be about. Well, that’s a bit of a lie, I’m pretty sure it will have something to do with goblins. I like goblins. It might end up being novella length, because I kinda want to try writing something between a short story and a full-blown novel. Whatever it is, you can expect it to be the same kind of slightly silly, slightly serious, just-for-fun kind of stuff that I love to write. I don’t want to write things that are going to set the world on fire (it’s warm enough as it is). I want to entertain. And I figure that if I’m not having fun, neither are my readers.

4) Start the third Miles Franco book

Now we’re getting ambitious. I honestly don’t know if I’ll get this far, and I only have a rough outline of the major ideas I want to explore in the book, so I’ve got a lot of work to do. But we’ll see how we go.

5) I will consume stories like they are delicious cakes (and I do loves me some cakes)

This one’s a bit more informal than the others, but it’s still important. Reading books, watching movies and TV shows, playing narrative-driven video games, these things are fuel for writers. How can I write if I don’t know what I enjoy? How can I learn new techniques and ideas without studying the masters? I aim to read widely and eclectically, from as many time periods as I can and across genres and media.

Really, I swear this isn’t just an excuse for me to procrastinate and play more Skyrim .

Conclusions

I have no doubt 2012 will throw all sorts of shit at me to try and stop me from achieving my goals. Life’s a wily son of a bitch like that. But hey, that’s all part of the game, right?

Happy 2012, everyone.
